General Information about Municipal Elections

Acts and Regulations

Municipal elections are governed by the Local Authorities Elections Act while the functions and roles of councils is governed by the Municipal Government Act.

Planning an election and running in an election can be complex processes. It is important that sufficient time is given and that key dates are met. Note: many of these dates are legislated. For a complete list of dates, please refer to the Municipal Election Calendar provided by Municipal Affairs.

2017 Key Dates for Municipalities (excluding Summer Villages)

Notice of Nomination Day Advertisement

September 18 Nomination Day
First week of September Hire election officials
October 16 Election Day
October 20 Official results released at 12 noon
October 30 Deadline to hold organizational meeting

Key Dates for Candidates (excluding Summer Villages)

September 19  Deadline to withdraw from nomination (noon)
October 16 Election Day
October 18 Deadline to ask Returning Officer for Recount (4 pm)

Key Dates for Summer Villages (Note: timelines differ for each summer village)

May  Local newspapers are notified of dates for nomination day and election day
June and July  Nominations for elected office in the summer village must be received.
4 weeks after Nomination Day  Election Day 
By August 31 Organizational meeting must be held
