Job Description : 

Under the direction of the Corporate Services Director, the Communication Coordinator will develop and implement communications that advance the reputation and positive image of the Town of Vegreville to the public through timely, accurate and integrated communications of the Town of Vegreville’s plans, policies, programs and activities.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Ensure all Town communications are delivered in a timely, effective, efficient and appropriate manner
  • Coordinate the information flow within all parts of the organization to ensure consistency and accuracy of messages to the community
  • Initiate, promote and encourage effective internal and external communication strategies and practices
  • Development, implementation, and maintenance of the strategic communication plans
  • Write consistently in an influential and creative style, and edit submissions for consistency in style and fluidity
  • Connect communication messages across vehicles to influence and ensure consistency and reinforcement of critical messages
  • Develop and assist with creating content for website, and social media platforms
  • Serve as the primary media contact for the Town
  • Build strong working relationships and partnerships with local media and other key community stakeholders
  • Develop strategies to receive public input and shape public awareness
  • Ensure that corporate branding is consistent across all departments and media platforms
  • Provide expert advice/best practices and counsel to Senior Management and Council including the development, implementation and evaluation of effective communications approaches for projects mitigation of emerging and potential internal/external issues, ensuring messages are clear and constant
  • Prepares the Municipal Scoop on a monthly basis
  • Coordinates and produces the Annual Report and supporting documentation
  • Development, editing and publishing of newsletters, brochures, public notices, press releases, and key messages for all communications of the Town
  • Provides assistance and prepares public press releases for the Town appointed Public Information Officer according to the Crisis Communication Plan and Municipal Emergency Plan
  • Promotes a positive corporate image of the Town of Vegreville to staff and the public
  • Assists with public open houses as required


  • Post-Secondary education in Communications, Public Affairs, Relations, Journalism or related areas
  • Three to five years of relevant experience in corporate communications, preferably in a public sector/municipal organization
  • Thorough knowledge and effective application of communications strategies and tactics, including communications planning, issues management, media relations, social media management, public relations and message development and advertising
  • Superior writing skills and demonstrated ability to communicate effectively to diverse audiences using a variety of communication methods
  • Strong organizational, time management and project management skills with a demonstrated ability to work both independently and within a team environment
  • Demonstrated competencies in the areas of professionalism, leadership, organizational understanding, teamwork, flexibility/adaptability, and relationship-building ability
  • Experience Proficiency with social media in a professional business environment
  • Knowledge of Municipal Government Act and the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act
  • Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, Publisher, Adobe Acrobat and Adobe Creative Suite
