Safety Codes Officer Team Lead One (1) Permanent Full-time Position

Reporting to the Director of Planning & Development Services, the Safety Codes Officer Team Lead ensures quality service is provided for all safety codes services. This position is accountable and responsible for the effective and timely delivery of safety codes services in the City of Fort Saskatchewan. The responsibilities of this position can be categorized into three major functions: issuing applicable permits and complete necessary plans reviews, inspections, and follow up for permits that require certification; leading the safety codes business unit including supervision of direct reports; and liaising with external stakeholders and partners to ensure service levels. This position is responsible for activities related to permit, inspections and enforcement functions relevant to the City of Fort Saskatchewan Safety Codes Services business unit and matters related to applicable agreements with adjacent municipalities. The Safety Codes Officer Team Lead performs compliance monitoring in one or more the following disciplines: Building, Electrical and Plumbing/Gas/PSDS.

Specific accountabilities for this position include: providing excellent customer service by answering inquiries related to the Alberta Building Code, permit issuance process, and other related matters; ensuring record maintenance is organized and in keeping with the requirements of the City’s Quality Management Plan and any applicable agreements to ensure adherence to the terms established in the agreement, the Quality Management Plan, the Safety Codes Act, and City procedures. The Safety Codes Officer Team Lead provides administrative, technical review and Code compliance monitoring services for buildings, and investigates and respond to complaints, questions, and/or inquiries related to permit applications, installations, code requirements, standards, the Safety Codes Act, and City Bylaws.

Applicants must have the following valid certificates: Building Safety Codes Officer – Residential, Building Safety Codes Officer – Part 9, Building Safety Codes Officer – Part 3, Electrical Safety Codes Officer Group A, Plumbing Safety Codes Officer Group A & B and Gas Safety Codes Officer Group A for the purposes of carrying out the duties in accordance with the SCA, Permit Regulations and the City’s QMP. These certifications must be maintained and training upgraded in accordance with the requirements of the Alberta Safety Codes Council. This position requires a minimum of five (5) years’ experience conducting inspections. The Safety Codes Officer Team Lead must be able to work in a high work volume, sensitive environment that requires tact, diplomacy, accuracy, judgement and strong communication and problem solving skills to ensure safety compliance and strong customer service. Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to write technical reports is required. Excellent coordination, work scheduling and time management skills are essential. Candidates will need to have strong competencies in Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook as well as GIS and City software. The successful candidate will have a valid Class 5 Driver’s License and a satisfactory driving record. The successful candidate will be required to provide a current Driver’s Abstract at time of interview.

The City of Fort Saskatchewan offers a competitive compensation package with a salary range of $97,227 to $114,445 per annum.
