AUMA sponsors women and municipal elections luncheon

September 26, 2017

AUMA and Community Futures West Yellowhead, in partnership and Grande Prairie Regional College – West Yellowhead, provided funding for a Women in Municipal Elections luncheon on Monday, September 11, in the Town of Hinton.

The luncheon featured AUMA’s promotional video showcasing women in municipal government, as well as a panel discussion with three female municipal councilors from the West Yellowhead region. The panel members consisted of Brenda Zinck, former municipal councillor for the Municipality of Jasper; Tammy Strang, current municipal councillor for the Town of Edson (but not seeking re-election); and Louise Kreswick, former municipal councillor and mayor for the Town of Grande Cache. The panel discussion centered around three questions:

  1. What were your main motivating factors to decide to run for municipal council?
  2. What were your biggest challenges as a municipal councillor, especially being a woman in an environment that is mostly male dominated?
  3. What were your greatest successes that you can share with the women here today?

This event allowed women interested in running for municipal government to make connections throughout the region and participants shared how the luncheon empowered them to make the decision to seek nomination for the upcoming election.
