Congratulations to the Town of Blackfalds on receiving AUMA’s 2017 Sustainability in Action Award for populations of 2,500 to 10,000.
The Town of Blackfalds’ Municipal Sustainability Plan provides guidance on achieving cultural sustainability goals. Under this objective, the Town transformed a neglected and vacant 101-year-old heritage home into a visitor information centre, the Wadey Centre, which opened on June 16, 2017. With support from Tourism Red Deer, Lacombe Regional Tourism, Blackfalds & District Chamber of Commerce, and the Blackfalds & Area Historical Society, Blackfalds successfully accessed Canada 150 Community Infrastructure funding for the restoration. The town, the County of Lacombe and the Historical Society also contributed funds for the project.
The Wadey Centre provides space for the Historical Society to display significant historic items from the community, as well as provide workspace and archival storage. The facility provides residents and visitors information about the Blackfalds area and access to Chamber of Commerce services.
The Wadey Centre is contributing towards realizing the goals of Blackfalds’ Municipal Sustainability Plan through enriching tourism and business services, which will contribute towards economic diversification. The centre also facilitates community engagement and enhances community pride through providing opportunities for residents and visitors to connect with Blackfalds’ history and current information on community services.
This initiative demonstrated the Town’s ability to expand arts and culture programming, advance regional collaboration, diversify the economy, and grow community engagement through connecting residents with human resources and other services.
