Indigenous Elder engagement tool available online

November 2, 2017

Native Counselling Services of Alberta has produced a guide on Indigenous engagement protocols entitled, Engaging with Elders: A Co-created Story. The guide was developed through input from Elders, knowledge holders, and cultural mediators from the Calgary area, which is part of the Treaty 7 First Nation territories.

The guide helps set the stage for communities to build relationships with Indigenous Elders and understand each other’s roles within that relationship. Engaging with Elders can assist municipalities to better engage with Elders in the community, and enhance understanding of how to work with and for Indigenous peoples.

It is important to note that these protocols were created within the context of the cultures of Indigenous people living in Calgary, and may not apply to all Indigenous communities in Alberta.
