Let’s be blunt: survey on public cannabis consumption
The Government of Alberta is asking Alberta municipalities to complete a brief survey on local approaches to the public consumption of cannabis. The survey will take approximately 15 minutes to complete and is open until December 30.
AUMA’s previous advocacy on this topic supported a provincial ban on consuming cannabis in public spaces, with the exception of enabling municipalities to permit consumption in certain designated areas if they chose to do so.
Last year, AUMA members passed a resolution calling for cannabis consumption to be provincially regulated along the same lines as alcohol consumption.This resolution notes that multiple public engagement surveys conducted by Alberta municipalities found a significant degree of opposition to the public consumption of cannabis, and that a majority of Albertans preferred a regulatory approach to cannabis consumption more similar to alcohol than to smoking.
