Modernizing Local Government Finance Statistics

Statistics Canada is working on enhancing the collection of municipal government data through its Local Government Modernization Project. The purpose of this project is to:

  1. Provide data users with more accurate quarterly financial statistics of municipal governments using a representative sample.
  2. Shorten and simplify the current local financial survey process.
  3. Further develop the detail at which Statistics Canada can report municipal financial data.

As a first step, Statistics Canada is looking to collect quarterly financial transactions from the accounting systems of a sample of municipalities, also known as general ledger files. Once Statistics Canada has finalized this sample, they will be looking to work with selected municipalities to collect more detailed data and provide better municipal financial statistics across the country.
