The provincial government has approved a two-year, $43 million expanded electronics recycling pilot managed by the Alberta Recycling Management Authority (ARMA). The pilot will inform the possibility of a permanently expanded electronics program. Currently, many municipalities are already collecting items like small home appliances and gaming equipment. Under the expanded pilot, municipalities will be compensated for collecting additional electronics included in the expansion.
AUMA has long advocated for expanding the electronics recycling program because it will create local jobs, protect the environment, and provide recycling services that are needed by all Albertans. AUMA members overwhelmingly endorsed a 2019 resolution calling on the provincial government to:
- expand the program;
- introduce an Extended Producer Responsibility Packaging and Paper program; and
- modernize Alberta’s recycling regulations.
We thank the provincial government for listening to municipalities and look forward to working with ARMA to implement the pilot that will benefit all municipalities in Alberta.
