Draft changes to resolutions policy released

AUMA has released draft changes to our resolutions policy, which are intended to come into effect after our 2019 convention. Members will get the chance to discuss and provide feedback on the proposed changes during next month’s Municipal Leaders’ Caucus (MLC).

The proposed changes are based on results of the Purpose of Resolutions Survey, conducted earlier this year and extensive work by the Municipal Governance and Small Communities Committees.

Key changes, which are highlighted with comments in the draft policy, include:

  • A purpose statement to guide the process (Section 2)
  • A new requirement for resolutions that are sponsored by a single Member to be seconded by another Member’s council before being submitted to AUMA (Section 7)
  • A new prioritization process to guide action on adopted resolutions (Section 58)

Members are encouraged to review the draft policy and bring comments, questions and suggestions to MLC. You can also provide feedback by emailing resolutions [at] auma.ca (resolutions[at]auma[dot]ca).

The current policy will govern the resolutions process for this year’s convention. The deadline for resolutions [at] auma.ca (submitting a resolution) for consideration at convention in Edmonton this October is May 31.
